NASL Career and International Success
Motaung’s prowess on the field soon drew international attention. In 1968, Dick Cecil, the founder and owner of the Atlanta Chiefs, along with Phil Woosnam, a former West Ham United player and manager of the Atlanta Chiefs in the newly formed North American Soccer League (NASL), scouted Motaung during team trials held in Zambia.
Despite initial challenges with adapting to the foreign climate and overcoming injuries, Motaung made an impressive debut for the Atlanta Chiefs, scoring two goals as a substitute in a friendly against Manchester City. His stellar performance throughout the season, which included 16 goals in 15 matches, earned him the title of NASL’s top scorer and the coveted “Rookie of the Year” award. He also secured a spot on the NASL All Star Team. Motaung returned to the NASL in 1975, playing for the Denver Dynamos for two seasons.
Founding Kaizer Chiefs FC
In 1970, Kaizer Motaung returned to South Africa and set out to create his own professional football team.
